Green Kay Nature Center

I saw about 30 species of birds at Green Kay this afternoon, but I only managed to get a few real good photos.

Normally a difficult bird to find, this American bittern popped out of the weeds just long enough for me to take a few snap-shots.

 There is a Boat-tailed Grackle displaying on the top of this old tree.

These wood storks kind of remind me of vultures.

Amazing Wakotahatchee Wetlands

      Today there were an unusual amount of little green herons out on the hunt for mosquito fish.

Yellow-headed Blackbird

This was an especially amazing find for Wakotahatchee Wetlands because Yellow-headed blackbirds are very rare in the state of Florida and are not usually found east of Louisiana.

Purple Swamp Hen

This is my "Sasquatch" photo of a purple swamp hen which can be easily mistaken for a purple gallenule.  They are a much larger introduced species that somewhat resembles a flying purple chicken.

   There is always a well camouflaged chuck-will's-widow near the entrance of the boardwalk for Delray Beach's Gumbo Limbo Nature Center.  Every year in December, we pay the center a visit and for four years in a row we have managed to find one sitting among the fallen branches and leaf litter.  I doubt few people ever actually see  him.
